President Donald Trump has voiced support for the idea of offering a "baby bonus" payment to mothers, as part of his administration's efforts to counter declining birth rates in the United States.

During a press briefing on April 22, Trump was asked whether he would consider providing American mothers with a financial bonus for having children. He responded, “Sounds like a good idea to me,” before moving quickly to another question.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later addressed the proposal in a statement to ABC News, saying Trump is “proudly implementing policies to uplift American families.”

Speaking to reporters outside the West Wing on April 23, Leavitt emphasized the administration’s commitment to supporting families. “The president wants America to be a country where all children can safely grow up and achieve the American dream,” she said. “As a mother myself, I am proud to work for a president who is taking significant action to leave a better country for the next generation.”

USA TODAY reached out to the White House for further comment but had not received a response as of Thursday.
